Corona Virus Update

The corona virus originated in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. It has spread to Thailand, USA, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, France, Vietnam, Nepal, Canada, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and Germany. There are now more than 560 people deceased due to the corona virus. There are more than 4,500 cases and 106 deaths confirmed in China and at least 47 confirmed cases outside of China.

The virus circulates in a range of animals, then it jumps to humans. The people who are most at risk of contracting this virus are those who work with animals such as live animals market workers or those who take care of people with the virus, whether it be taking care of a family member or being a health care worker.

As far as we know right now, symptoms can be something mild like having a fever, a cough, or shortness of breath, but they can also be more severe like having pneumonia, kidney failure, or even dying. You can be diagnosed by a test called PCR, which stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction. While there is currently no treatment for the corona virus, pharmaceutical companies are hard at work to develop a vaccine.

Some ways to prevent catching this virus is to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, avoiding close contact with those who are unwell, stay home when you feel ill, and wash your hands regularly. To prevent catching the virus though an animal, you should avoid any unnecessary contact with them and make sure that meats are cooked thoroughly before eating.

Even in the severe cases of the virus most people infected are likely to fully recover just like they would from a normal flu.
