After all the hype over the last 2 months, you might be thinking, What is the significance of the World Cup?  The World Cup is a fútbol event that only happens every 4 years. It is held in a different country every time. The first World Cup was held in 1930 in Montevideo, Uruguay. The most recent World Cup was held in Qatar in eight different stadiums. The 4 years is necessary to have enough time for qualification tournaments and playoffs among national teams to take place. The World Cup lasts for at least 29 days every time it occurs. There are around 64 matches in every World Cup.

The World Cup is the most watched sports tournament because billions of people watch the event live in the stands or live on television. When it comes to the World Cup it gets over 1 billion views/watchers more than the Olympics itself. The World Cup is an event that brings everybody together because it does not include one country from each continent but many countries in each continent.

Socially, the world cup brings in a lot of job opportunities, hotel stays, and a lot of spendings at restaurants nearby. It also makes a more equal society through fútbol. The World Cup gets people to come out of their shell to support a certain team or to just enjoy a game with friends. Hosting the World Cup event in different countries helps them grow their economy because of how much money they make from these kinds of events. It brings more tourism which means more money to the places that they go to explore that the natives don’t go to.

The World Cup is very eco friendly especially when it comes to the creations of the stadiums. They use a comprehensive set of implemented initiatives that mitigate emissions associated with the tournaments. The measures usually include energy efficient stadiums, a green building certification in design, construction, operations, and the low emissions transportations as well. The World Cup is sustainable because it uses carbon neutral. They wanted to offset the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Also it features people from all over the world playing the same game, using the same equipment and the same rules with no type of conflict in play.

Why is the World Cup controversial this time around? Well the WC’s host this year is in some deep trouble. There is currently an investigation going against them because of how they built the stadium to host this event. Reportedly more than 6,500 migrant workers have died while supporting infrastructure and construction for the tournament and the current discrimination towards the LGBTQ+ community and the women that live there. These accusations led to many groups of people boycotting this event and the country of Qatar as a whole.

This year’s World Cup has been the first World Cup where money was no object and budgets were limitless. It is very important to all continents across the globe but more importantly South America because they are known for their infatuation with fútbol. It is considered one of the greatest sports in South America. That is why the World Cup is very important and highly celebrated across the globe.
