MRHS Quiz Bowl Wins!

Staff Collaboration

On December 6th, 2021 the MRHS Gifted and Talented Quiz Bowl Team traveled to PCTI for a quiz bowl competition of epic proportions! The MRHS team consists of 21 of the school’s top Juniors and Seniors and is led by Mr. Tavarez, one of our most enthusiastic teachers. The match involved two other schools, PCTI and Hawthorne High and was comprised of challenging questions on a variety of subjects ranging from Math and Literature to Geography and History and even Pop Culture and Video Games. The teams arrived at 10:00 in the morning and battled each other until 1:30 in the afternoon.

The format for the game sets 4 representatives from each team up against the other school’s reps. Each team of 4 is given a buzzer to use when they think they have the correct answer. The first team to buzz in gets to answer the question. If the answer is correct, that team scores one point and they are given a bonus question. If they answer the question incorrectly, the other teams are given the chance to answer. Again, a correct answer earns one point and the chance at a bonus question. The teams compete like this for about 2 hours before they are given a break.

During the break, the teams were treated to lunch in the PCTI cafeteria. Senior team player, Mya Romero, commented on the difference between the MRHS Cafe and PCTI’s Cafe, “We were all really surprised to see that the PCTI students sat at tables with plexiglass boxes around each student because of Covid.” When lunch ended, the teams went back to battling it out.

The second half of the competition lasted about one hour and ended with MRHS scoring the most points for their first win of the season. On behalf of the Falcon Flyer Staff, “Congratulations Manchester! You ROCK!!!”
