My Top Ten Things In Marine Biology

#1 Bioluminescent Beaches
The most famous Bioluminescent beach is Puerto Mosquito in Puerto Rico. The light is emitted by tiny organisms called bioluminescent algae that live in the water.
#2 Coral Reefs
The biggest coral reef is located in Queensland, Australia and stretches for 1,429 miles. CoralĀ is usually very bright colors but every once in a while you’ll see grey dead coral. When the water temperature gets warmer the coral releases its algae which makes up its color and when it stays warm too long it turns fully grey and never gets its color back naturally.
#3 The Mariana Trench
The trench is about 36,201 feet deep and is apparently still getting deeper. Since its so far under water it doesnāt get any sunlight.Ā It may seem dark and inhabitable to people but many organisms live down there. The reason people can’t swim down there is because of the water pressure. The water pressure is still changing each time scientists are able to determine it but the water pressure is enough to break human bones.
#4 The Mantis Shrimp
Even though this animal may seem blind It has better vision than most thing on the planet. Us humans have three color receptors in our eyes which are red, green and blue. The shrimp has 12.Ā Even though it’s pretty small it knows how to punch. The punch’s speed is 50 mph ā roughly the same acceleration as a 22-caliber bullet.Since their punches are strong enough to break glass they usually can’t be kept in captivity.
#5 Manta Rays
Manta rays are actually harmless unlike a few other rays. Their Wingspans up to 29 feet (8.8 m) wide and weights up to 5,300 pounds. They eat plankton, shrimp, and sometimes fish.
#6 Whale Sharks
The whale shark is the biggest type of shark on earth. Each shark has different types of white spots on its back which makes all of them unique. A whale shark’s teeth are so tiny that they can only eat small shrimp, fish and plankton
#7 Albino Alligator Gars Nothing special they are just pretty.
#8 Flying FishĀ No they don’t actually fly. They propel themselves out of the water at speeds of more than 35 miles an hour. Once in the air, their rigid āwingsā allow them to glide for up to 650 feet. Researchers believe that flying fish may have evolved to escape marine reptile predators.
#9 Box Jellyfish
They live in the warm Australian waters. They are the most poisonous jellyfish on earth. Its sting is so overpoweringly painful, human victims have been known to go into shock and drown or die of heart failure before even reaching shore.Ā Approximately 100 people die each year from the jellyfish
#10 Underwater Lakes
Underwater lakes and rivers form on the bottom of the ocean when seawater seeps up from the seafloor, dissolves the salt layer around it, and collects in the resulting depressions. The lakes are usual toxic to sea animals but its ok for people to swim in them with the right gear. Lakes likeĀ this aren’t man made, it’s caused by the earth and doesn’t really have anything to do with people.
