Traditionally, Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, has been one of the biggest shopping days of the year and used by retailers to gauge how well they will perform over the November-December holiday season. It was also the day shoppers counted on retailers to introduce their biggest holiday deals. According to a 2009 article published in TIME magazine, the phrase “Black Friday” was first used in the 1960’s by Philadelphia newspapers referring to the huge rush of crowds to stores on the day after Thanksgiving. Many stores offer highly promoted sales at discounted prices and often open early, sometimes as early as midnight or even on Thanksgiving.
Black Friday has become one of the main shopping days for people around the world due to the wide variety of discounts and offers it offers. The Black Friday sales also give shoppers the opportunity to take advantage of limited-time deals and find the best ones available.
The first black Friday was on November 24, 1869. It was originally associated with financial crises and stock market crashes. But overtime, it evolved into the shopping extravaganza we know today. The tradition of stores opening early on Black Friday started in the 1930’s, when retailers began offering big sales to attract customers. Online shopping has also become a huge part of black friday, with many retailers offering deals and discounts on their websites. Black Friday is no longer an American tradition; it has spread to other countries like Canada, the UK, and Australia.
