The NYC Subway is one of the most used and biggest transportation systems in the world. With 3.2 million daily commuters and 1.168 billion a year. And these 1.168 billion yearly commuters are carried along on 472 subway trains, 6,500 cars, and 665 miles of track plus 472 stations. It’s clearly a vast system that carries a vast number of people (MTA). But despite this, it surprises nobody that the subway is TERRIBLE.
Firstly, there’s the huge amount of fare evaders that still take the subway, then, there’s the crumbling subway infrastructure, plus the fact that many subways have bad on-time performance. This doesn’t even mention the rats that run around the subway and frighten commuters. Along with transit crime that sees innocent people waiting for the subway robbed of precious valuables. And don’t even get me started on how DIRTY the place is, have you seen the dirt and grime everywhere?
NYC is the richest city in the world by GDP of all the world’s major cities. According to Wikipedia, in 2022, the city had a GDP of $1.26 trillion, and in 2024 the combined wealth of the Big Apple’s residents was $3 TRILLION dollars! Wall Street, Billionaires’ Row, and Times Square are world famous, but the subway could make the city look bad alone, without counting the city’s other problems. Push after push after push has been made to fix the subway, but these have been largely unsuccessful. Do you think the subway is destined to be like this forever?
