Veterans Day is a US federal holiday on November 11 that honors all those who have served in the US armed forces. Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. Veterans Day became a national holiday in 1938 and in 1954 after World War II. Veterans Day is important because it honors and thanks all living veterans for their service and sacrifice to the United States. A quote that stuck out to me while reading about veterans day is “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because…” – President Woodrow Wilson, in his 1919 proclamation establishing Armistice Day, also Barack Obama said “Whenever the world makes you cynical; whenever you seek true humility, and true selflessness — look to a veteran.” – Barack Obama. This highlights the impact of Veterans Day on society by establishing a national day to honor and express gratitude to all who have served, thereby promoting awareness of veterans and their contributions. Another way that Veterans Day impacted the community is that many businesses offer special deals, discounts, and free meals to veterans. I think everyone should thank veterans for all the work they did.
