Fashion in the 1980s was bold, colorful, and full of personality. During November, people mixed warm fall clothes with bright and flashy trends. It was very common to see layered looks like sweaters with denim jackets or huge coats over bright shirts. Many people were inspired by famous stars such as Madonna and Michael Jackson, the two people who made these unique and loud outfits that seemed cool. Power dressing also became a HUGE trend, especially for people going to work, with blazers with wide shoulder pads to look strong and confident.
The 1980s were also about freedom and creativity in fashion itself, a designer named Gianni Versace has said, “In the 80s, fashion was freedom. It was about showing who you really were without fear.” Madonna shared with us, Clothes were a part of my attitude. Lace gloves, big hair, it was all about standing out.” A fashion editor named Anna Wintour also said, “The 1980s were fearless. Everyone wanted to be seen, and fashion gave people that power.” These quotes show how people used fashion to express themselves and be daring, even in everyday life.
In my own view, November fashion in the 1980s was fun and inspiring, it felt cool, and now in modern day it feels so old but brings back some memories and makes you learn about the fashion culture itself from before you were even born or when you were there during the time. People didn’t think about other people’s thoughts or judgments; they wore whatever made them feel confident. The styles were very bright and sometimes a bit outrageous, but that’s what made it so special. I think this time showed that clothes can be more than something to wear; they can show who you are and express your emotions from the inside.
