Sophia Vergara is the 51-year-old Colombian-American star of the hit sitcom Modern Family and she may soon be starring in her own spin-off series. She calls her portrayal of an upbeat Colombian girl, Goria, “A mixture of my mom and my aunt.” Sophia is also a model. One cause that is important to her is bringing awareness about cancer. Another cool thing? Sofia embraces her accent, serving as a role model for young girls who feel the pressure to process and to learn English.
She grew up in the Latin World Entertainment. Sofia has a talent-management firm that she co-founded in 1994. It is now one of the most-powerful Hispanic media marketing companies in the world. In 2014 Vergara became a U.S. citizen. 1989 was the First time she was offered a job, also in the year 2000 she became a runway model for the first time. Vergara was discovered by a photographer while walking on a beach in Colombia and she was quickly presented with offers of modeling and television work. During an endocrinologist appointment for her son she tells, “While we were there, the doctor wanted to check me, too, and he found a lump in my neck,” she said. “I felt no symptoms.” There are a variety of treatment options for thyroid cancer. She found this news on November 23, 2009.
Since she wasn’t born nor did she live in America, she could speak little to no English. Sofia shows many young girls who believe that they must speak English fluently and how they must be in the U.S. to be recognized, that that’s far from the case. That if an opportunity comes your way don’t hesitate to try it out and see where it takes you. “I guess at the end of the day, all women like to be appreciated and treated with respect and kindness.” It’s important for people of any race, not just Hispanics to see and understand Sofia’s story and how they could most definitely learn something from how far she’s come.
Therefore, don’t let the place you come from to get in the way of opportunities. As well as sickness and sadness. Everyone can rise up, you most definitely can.
