“Behind every great daughter is a truly amazing dad.”
My dad is the best! He is patient, kind, and fun. The first time I was driving on the streets I almost hit the car into the wall, omg it was a disaster. I went onto the sidewalk and instead of hitting the brake I pressed the gas pedal then my dad screamed saying PRESS THE BRAKE, so I did and I almost put a dent on the car but he just smiled drove the car back home. Patience is not the only character trait my dad has. Not only is he patient, but he is also brave, smart, and a hardworking dad.
One challenge of being a single parent is financial instability. Raising a child is expensive, from paying for childcare to buying food and clothing. Doing it alone makes the costs seem overwhelming at times. Especially when coming from another country and not knowing the language, but nothing became difficult for my dad. Yes, my dad came from Mexico with no money and he came with nothing because he worked so hard and became what he came for. He gave me and my brother anything you can ever ask for and we are grateful for that. I remember when I wanted this tall doll, that you could dress her up and everything, and he made sure that I got my tall doll. I still have it as a memory in a box. Maybe he did not have enough money and was trying his best to buy what we wanted.
If you know how Hispanic parents are, they always want the best for you, especially when they do not have what we have now. I try my best at school to become what I want to be and make my dad proud. My dad was not able to graduate from high school because there was no money to finish paying the school so he had to drop out and start working. In Mexico, there were not great job opportunities, so my dad decided to migrate to the United States of America. My dad came here for a better life for him and his family. It became a struggle for him when he came here and had no idea of what he would come into, especially with the language. He tried his best when coming here to become who he is now. You may ask, what he became, he is the best father I could ever ask for.
After so many struggles my brother was born and then I, his favorite child. Many years later we started school and my dad would always tell me “Portate bien, y obedience” which means behave well and listen. He will always yell at me when it comes to bad grades and doing poorly at school. I would never have expected when he would yell at me because I was his first daughter so I would not like when my dad would yell at me. My dad would always yell at me because he wanted the best for me and become what I wanted to be. I would like to thank him for all the yelling because now I’m doing well at school and I’m trying my hardest to give back to my dad everything he gave us when he was not doing the best. Now I have been accepted to my first college and there are other goals that I have accomplished that have made my dad proud. One of them was a summer program at William Paterson and they paid me money and instead of keeping it to myself, I gave it all to my dad because he deserves it more than I do.
My father is my role model and I will do my best to become a great person like him. He is one of the best people to ever have had in my life. I will always be thankful for everything my dad has done for me and his family. This is why I consider him as my role model and will always be my role model.
