From the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, or even the movies we watch, we are constantly being told who to be. As a result of this, we often give up our individuality to fit into a society of people who are also trying to fit in. What is individuality? Individuality is the concept of someone having their own identity, opinions, and thoughts. In other words, it is anything that comes from within oneself. It’s the ability to think, believe, and give yourself independence from the rest of society. It’s stepping out of the comfort of being like everyone else. Although individuality is appreciated and loved, society often pressures people to fall in line, which makes it difficult for people to hold onto their individuality.
Society pressures people to fall in line by rewarding those who conform and discouraging anything different. It does this through trends, social media, and the fear of judgment or feeling alone. When it comes to trends, you’re expected to fall in line and do them too. For example, when a new slang word or TikTok dance becomes popular, you’re expected to take part in it. If you don’t, you can feel left out or judged for not keeping up. Different TikTok dances and different vocal stims are spread all over. Social media allows information to spread more rapidly. When you miss out on something that everyone else knows about it makes you feel like the odd one out. When it comes to a fear of judgement, as humans no one wants to be judged. No one wants to feel different than anyone else. So we let this fear trap our individuality in the quiet corners of ourselves. As it calls for us and we ignore it because we want to be liked.
Individuality matters because it’s what makes us who we are. It’s what makes us separate from the rest of the crowd. Lacking individuality can affect relationships, mental health, creativity, decision-making, and personal fulfillment. It can prevent you from growing deeper connections with others. When you have a clear understanding of who you are, you know what you like and what you don’t. It’s healthier and easier to set boundaries. People respect boundaries. Without respect, relationships lack depth and understanding. If you pretend to be like others in relationships, the relationship can feel inauthentic. You want to find people who share your actual interests and values. Rather than following what’s viral.
When it comes to decision-making, your lack of individuality can cause your decisions to be tampered with. It can cause your decisions to be different from what you really want. Creativity can be affected by zooming in too much on what’s already made. Looking into what’s already created instead of “what can I do that’s different from anything anyone’s ever seen before?”. Personal fulfillment is all about being true to yourself. When you’re true to yourself and what you believe in, it makes life more meaningful. For example, someone who enjoys dancing would find life more enjoyable than if they were playing football. Lastly, your mental health can be affected heavily by suppressing your individuality, potentially leading to stress, anxiety, or feeling empty. Being yourself reduces the pressure to constantly perform or fit in.
If society encourages conformity, the real question becomes whether individuality can really exist within it. And the answer is yes because individuality comes from personal choice, not whether society allows it. I mean it’s not against the law to separate yourself from others and make your own decisions. However, it is frowned upon. You have to be willing to pull yourself away from certain categories that you don’t believe you belong in. For example, if you see your whole class is failing but you, should you go and fail? No, separate yourself from the norm because that’s not who you want to be. Remember that society may control behavior and opinions, but remember our individuality is one thing that can’t be taken from us because it’s ours. You’re not controlled unless you willingly put yourself there.
In conclusion, hold onto your individuality. Grip it with all your might because it’s yours. Within a society that consistently wants you to fall in line and be like everyone else, allow your individuality to come naturally. Of course, it’s going to be easier to blend in, but choosing to stay true to yourself, it leads to deeper fulfillment within yourself, stronger relationships, and a more meaningful sense of identity.
