Superbowls is one of the most important sports events of the year. For some people it means eating game food and excitingly watching Sunday night football, and as for others, they look forward to the big halftime show. This year the excitement for the halftime show was split in half. Many people were extremely excited to watch Bad Bunny perform and listen to the message he was going to make, going as far as calling it the Benitobowl. Meanwhile other people made a petition to replace Bad Bunny with country singer George Strait.
Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican artist who started from soundcloud to now headlining the Superbowl halftime show, has done a lot to get to where he is now. He has had many hit songs and albums but his recent album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS has been a huge hit. This particular album has been listened to around the world with over 1.5 billion streams on Spotify. Bad Bunny has been speaking out about everything going on in the world, not only at the Superbowl halftime but also at the Grammys. BBC states, “‘Before I say thanks to God, I’m going to say ICE out,” Bad Bunny said, referring to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.” Bad Bunny has spoken out about this situation many times and brought light to it.
Furthermore, this year halftime viewers were split in half. Many people were in support of Bad Bunny’s halftime show, some people only watching the Superbowl for him. While others claimed they should have a performance only in English. Which brings in the separate halftime show from Kid Rock. A large number of people did not like the idea of a Latino singer performing in a language they didn’t understand. On the other hand, people that don’t understand Spanish said they don’t have to understand it to dance to it. The New York Times reported “For some, the mere fact of Bad Bunny’s selection for the halftime show could only be read as a political statement. It even inspired a counterprogramming event: the “All-American Halftime Show,” For the first time ever, an opposite halftime show was made purely because of people’s likes and thoughts.
Bad Bunny not only made a statement, but he also inspired millions of Hispanics. As a Hispanic myself, his quote “Mi nombre es Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasión, y si hoy estoy aquí en el Super Bowl 60, es porque nunca, nunca dejé de creer en mí. Tú también deberías de creer en ti. Vales más de lo que piensas. Confía en mí.” was powerful because sometimes I do feel like giving up, but I want to be the first generation of my family to attend college, and prove most statistics wrong. Bad Bunny’s messages proves that where you come from doesn’t decide where you can go, neither does what people think of you. We are all united and equal.
