Flooding in China

Flooding in China

Currently in southern China, tragic flooding has been damaging the Guangdong province. Leaving four citizens dead, and several others still remain missing. So far 10 people have gone missing according to state media.  State-run media also said about 110,000 people have been evacuated in the province due to the floods.

Footage on state media and online show large portions of land afloat by the floods and rescuers ferrying people on lifeboats in waist-deep water. Several major rivers have burst their banks, and authorities are closely monitoring “dangerously high” water levels. Much of Guangdong is part of the low-lying Pearl River delta, which is exposed to floods due to the rise in sea levels and storm surges. Guangdong is one of the most densely populated areas in China, home to just around 127 million people. According to China’s Xinhua news agency, at least 110,000 people have been evacuated, with some 25,800 in shelters.

In Guangzhou, the capital of the Guangdong province, the government said the city had logged a cumulative rainfall of 60.9cm just in April. Heavy downpours were continuously adding the risk of flash floods, in the city of Shenzhen. Xinhua news agency says three people so far have died in Zhaoqing city and one rescuer died in Shaoguan City. Floods have also filled Jiangxi province, local media reported 459 people had been evacuated, while rains and floods have affected 1,500 hectares of crops and caused financial losses of more than 41 million yuan ($5.7m).

We wish a safe recovery to everyone who has suffered from these floods in their home country China.
